APA Style

TIP Sheet
APA Style

APA Style is a standard format developed by the American Psychological Association for research papers in the behavioral and social sciences. APA style evolves slowly, in particular to accommodate newer electronic media sources and computerized document production. For updated information on using APA style, we recommend you start with the following links. A variety of print APA guides are available at most bookstores.

Purdue University's OWL
Purdue University's Online Writing Lab describes basic paper and references page format as well as guidelines for abstracts, appendixes, endnotes, tables, and figures. It offers explanations and examples of in-text and parenthetical citations; how to use direct and indirect quotes; how to cite online sources, including authorless web articles, online journals, e-mails, listserv postings, and databases; how to cite interviews and lectures, television programs, ads, and sound recordings. It links to sample articles and papers and plenty of additional information.

APA Online
On the American Psychological Association (APA) website, you can order the official print APA guide or get answers to frequently asked questions about APA format and style. A tutorial, "The Basics of APA Style®," is also available on the website via the "Learning APA Style" link.  The latest edition of the APA handbook, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, is available for purchase on this site as well.
